Police Standoff Ends In Juniata Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A police standoff has come to an end with the arrest of a suspect who fired shots at Philadelphia police officers early Wednesday morning.
The incident started at about 6 a.m. in the 500 block of E. Courtland Street in the city's Juniata Park section.
According to investigators, the incident began when officers were called to the home for an apparent domestic dispute.
When officers arrived, they spotted the male suspect on the porch of the home.
"When they tried to apprehend the male, he slammed the door shut on them. There were shots fired at the officers. They very wisely declared a barricade situation and contained the property front and rear," Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan explained.
Whitaker Avenue was blocked off and police put the neighborhood on lock down.
Residents were told to stay in their homes as the SWAT team took over and they were able to convince the man to surrender peacefully.
Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan told Eyewitness News that the suspect had a female inside the home, but she was not injured.
He also revealed that a firearm was recovered at the scene and police were waiting for a search warrant to execute a search of the home.
"There is no training to prepare you to be fired upon. So it's really very admirable the professionalism and the restraint those officers showed."
No officers were injured.
The incident remains under investigation.
