Hope For Health Care
Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The medical system is broken.
You hear that comment often these days. I don't argue with that statement. There is no doubt that just about every aspect of the business side of medicine is in disrepair, but many of the people who provide care often get lumped in with the political issues surrounding health care.
The truth of the matter is that in my career I continue to come across people in nursing, therapy, social work, pharmacy and medicine who are every bit as committed as those in prior years. The amount of knowledge to provide quality care is greater than ever and the ability to deal with mounds of paperwork and seemingly non-sensical rules and regulations does not deter them.
In fact, it is because of this that I am optimistic about the future of health care in this country. As long as the spirit of those providing care isn't broken, quality care will continue.
The other point is that there are many administrators, politicians and others in positions of power who do care and we need to count on this as well.
