Home Testing For HIV
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There has been a great deal of talk surrounding the availability of home testing for HIV in the United States.
Usually when arguments are made for or against the testing it has to do with people and their concerns surrounding proper psychological support once the diagnosis is made. But that is here in the United States. In the rest of the world, where most of the nearly 2.4 million cases of HIV are diagnosed each year, there is another issue - especially in poorer countries - the stigma that comes with HIV.
New home tests may be an answer to getting more diagnoses and more treatment. Think about it. If you are in a less tolerant country and have anonymous testing you might be more likely to do it.
