Holiday Snow Makes Its Way Through The Delaware Valley
By Carol Erickson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The weekend snow started to the west of Philadelphia Saturday morning, after falling aloft and evaporating before reaching the ground.
Those disappearing snows allowed the air column to moisten so that the bigger shot of snow can make it to the ground as the morning and afternoon wear on.
A dry slot coming through the Philadelphia area has delayed the start of precipitation here, but the snow and rain, and that ever popular rain/snow line, will be making its way in here.
Amounts should generally be from one to 3 inches, but in some areas to the north and west might pick up a bit more as the temperatures are below freezing.
This storm isn't a big deal because it doesn't really come together over our area for big snow; that will happen more toward Boston later today.
Remember, treated surfaces shouldn't be a problem based on the amounts and temperatures expected, though untreated surfaces in below freezing areas could be overwhelmed by the snow if it falls fast enough to cover walkways and secondary roads.
Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for Saturday for New Castle, Salem, Gloucester, Camden and Northern Burlington counties on northward. The snow will mix or change to rain in areas not under the advisory and possibly across the southern end of the advisory counties.
Timing: Snow arrives around 8:30 a.m. and will end mid-late afternoon from west to east.
Amounts: In general 1-3" but, in the advisory areas, an isolated 4" amount possible. There will be little or no accumulation across extreme southern New Jersey and central Delaware.
The highest amounts will be on the grass and untreated surfaces due to the snow falling during daytime as temps rise above freezing. A shift in the track northward will bring the rain farther north.
