Holiday Lights: Mayfair Christmas Decoration Contest
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a holiday decorating contest that is lighting up a Northeast Philly community.
CBS3's Vittoria Woodill talks to one of the judges to find out what it takes to be a winner.
More than 100 homes in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia have every inch of their lawns, windows, stairs and more decked out for the Mayfair Christmas Decoration Contest!
Donny Smith, president of the Mayfair Civic Association, is one of the people who started the contest three years ago to bring the community together and it's working.
The contest gets bigger every December.
"We used to have people nominating themselves but now we have other people nominating neighbors," said Smith. "We score each entry one to twelve with twelve being a full-blown Griswold extravaganza.
Smith is referring to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Actor Chevy Chase played the character Clark Griswold whose 25,000 holiday lights caused a neighborhood power outage.
In the Mayfair community, twelve judges have the difficult task of dubbing the most decked out as winners.
"The judges are community leaders pulling the whole community together for a fun family atmosphere," said Smith.
The Mayfair Civic Association will announce the results on Monday December 21.
