The Philadelphia Union announced on social media that goalkeeper Holden Trent has died. He was 25.

In a post on X Saturday afternoon, the Union said, "The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better."

According to CBS sports, Trent was admitted into intensive care earlier this week. Trent's family has been sharing updates in his Instagram story.

It's unknown at this time the cause of death.

"He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed," the Union said in a social post on X. "We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends."

CBS News Philadelphia reached out to the Union.

Major League Soccer released a statement on X that said in part, "A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia."
