Hispanic Group Says NJ Still Giving Latino Victims of Sandy Short Shrift
By David Madden
FREEHOLD, N.J. (CBS) -- Many in Sandy-ravaged sections of New Jersey are complaining, one year after the superstorm, that they're still waiting on promised state and federal help.
A group representing Hispanics has fired off a second letter to HUD officials about the response they've gotten from the Christie Administration.
Two weeks ago, the Latino Action Network complained about inadequate information posted on a Spanish-language recovery web site (see related story). Christian Estevez, a spokesman for the group, concedes the state has fixed that problem but says it's not enough.
"Fixing the web site was only one part of it," he said today. "The other part of it was making the people whole who may have been impacted by this omission."
His group seeks to extend filing deadlines for seeking FEMA assistance. Estevez also complains that his group has yet to have any meaningful discussions with state officials over the issues they've cited.
