Hiring Preference Proposal Advances for Grandkids of Philly's Fallen Heroes
By Mike Dunn
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia City Council today took a further step toward honoring firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty, by extending civil service hiring preferences to the grandchildren of those who perished.
Children of fallen Philadelphia police and firefighter have, for years, received a 10-point bonus on civil service exams when applying for a city job.
Now, a City Council committee has okayed a measure that would give the same preference to the grandchildren of the deceased.
Among those speaking in support at the hearing was Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers.
"The sacrifice and dedication of these members should always be remembered and honored," he said.
Police lieutenant Fran Healey said having grandchildren want to enter the force is not uncommon.
"Ask any Philadelphia police officer and you're certain to hear that a parent or grandparent has served or may still be serving," he noted.
Unless Council extends its June calendar, this bill will be given final passage when the lawmakers return in September from their summer recess.
