Hippos Find New Home Within Philadelphia Zoo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Zoo's hippos are in their new home.
The Zoo's Pachyderm House is being transformed into the new Children's Zoo, so Cindy and Unna, the Zoo's 22-year-old, 4,000 pound hippos had to move.
The Zoo's Chris Bartos says it took six months to move the big girls to their new home.
"We have a big crate that was set up near their own exhibit and we spent time with total positive reinforcement. Fortunately, these girls like food a lot. The keepers would call them in and they would give them treats and rewards. And we got them used to hearing the door close behind them."
The new exhibit is on the African Plains and contains indoor and outdoor pools and a large outdoor area.
