High School Students Compete In 1st Round Of Pa. Science Fair

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This is a busy time of year for science fairs. Hundreds of area high schoolers will compete tomorrow in the first round of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science.

If the president's observation that we're in another "Sputnik moment" is to result in a burst of scientific achievement, it's contests like PJAS where it might show up.

State director Laura Fisanick is a newly-minted Ph.D.

"My dissertation was about science fairs, and the most important thing for science fairs, for student success in science fairs, was support, monetary support and time from parents, from teachers, that enable students to be successful."

Fisanick just got back from the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting where three PJAS winners presented research on cancer and T-cells.

Fisanick is bullish on this sort of smart and motivated young scientist competing with the best the world has to offer. Winners of tomorrow's regionals move on to states in May.
