High School Freshman Says Rape Is No Laughing Matter In Youtube Video
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Hatboro-Horsham High School freshman has put together a stunning video to draw attention to the acceptance of rape jokes in our society.
Carrie Ciocca, 15, had a class in Communications Strategies, and each class member had to do a research project.
"There was like lists of topics that we could choose from, and that was just -- looked interesting to me. So, I looked into it and once I started doing research on it, it was really horrifying to see, and how people react."
Kristina Ulmer teaches 9th grade English at Hatboro-Horsham High School. She says the project that her student came up with was so impressive, she had to share it.
"She spent all this time searching all over the Internet for places where people talked about rape and were joking about it. And she pulled out ads making fun of rape, searching on Twitter for jokes about rape."
The two-minute video called "No Still Means No: Rape Culture in Today's Society" shows screen shots of websites were rape jokes are prevalent, juxtaposed with photos of real rape victims at anti-rape rallies. Ciocca hopes this opens some people's eyes about the horrors of rape and shows them it is no laughing matter.
