High Hopes For New Supermarket In North Philadelphia's Brewerytown Section

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A groundbreaking was held this afternoon for a new supermarket in North Philadelphia, in a neighborhood that hasn't had a supermarket in over a decade.
The groundbreaking took place at 31st and Girard, in a lot that will soon be known as "The Shops at Brewerytown."
City Council president Darrell Clarke (far right in photo) says the main shop here will be a Bottom Dollar food supermarket.
"It's been very difficult, particularly for senior citizens," he told KYW Newsradio today. "The closest supermarket was actually all the way over on Broad Street. Fortunately, this is right in their backyard, and we expect a significant participation. I think we'll probably break records for the Bottom Dollar food stores."
Developer Richard Soloff (third from left in photo, wearing blue sports jacket) expects to have the supermarket open later this year.
"We are shooting to have this store open for Thanksgiving," he says. "We're literally going to start construction on Monday morning."
(Kuznits:) "What are the chances that people will be able to buy their Thanksgiving turkeys here?"
(Soloff:) "Based on my three other stores, I think 95 percent."
