High-Flying Mishaps For New Drone Owners

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  There's nothing like unwrapping a new toy, only to bid farewell to the fun just moments later.

Christmas morning alone provided hundreds of video uploads showing new drone owners becoming former drone owners as they sent their gifts crashing, just moments after receiving them.

The holidays are proving that for this year's hot ticket item, there is more than meets the eye.

"We have the kids walking back, dragging their parents in, up to the retired person looking for a new hobby and everyone in between," said Clifford Grimes, of Liberty City Drones.

Liberty City Drones opened up just two weeks ago and they're not only providing lessons to beginners, they are helping them get legal.

Drones weighing .55 lbs and above must be registered with the FAA by february 20th.

"You want to register before flying and list your registration number on the drone itself. It's pretty simple. It's name, address and you pay five dollars."

Now that it's legal- and an investment- don't skip the pre-flight check.

Your drone may need calibration to keep it steady just like any other aircraft.

"Know where you are going to go, where you are going to land if something does go wrong. Do not fly a damaged plane," Grimes warns.

Liberty city's next venture... providing insurance plans.
