Hextall On Promotion To GM: 'I've Got My Dream Job'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Flyers officially announced Paul Holmgren has been promoted to team President and former Flyers goalie, Ron Hextall, has been promoted to general manager.
In seven full seasons with Paul Holmgren as the general manager, the Flyers had a .598 winning percentage and one Stanley Cup finals appearance in 2010.
"I just think it's perfect," Holmgren said in a press conference on Wednesday. "What I'm really excited about today is --- and I think today is the right day. The timing of this is right and the man is right. I am really honored and excited, and I think privileged, to be able to name Ron Hextall the new general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers."
Hextall, the 1987 Vezina Trophy winner who spent the majority of his NHL goal-tending career with the Flyers, was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame in 2008. Hextall says he is confident he will succeed as general manager with the organization.
"When I was done playing 15 years ago, my next goal was to become a general manager," Hextall said on Wednesday. "I think I know a lot of aspects of the game and I think I am very ready for this position. I feel very confident that I can do the job. I think we have a very good staff. I've got Homer [Holmgren] to learn and obviously Bob Clarke to lean on."
Hextall will be in charge of all hockey decisions for the Flyers and went on to call the promotion his "dream job."
"Not only did I reach my goal of being a general manager, but I've got my dream job," Hextall said. "I've got a special feeling about this organization and I am absolutely honored and thrilled today to be sitting here. I'll do the best job I can do, I'll work hard to reach the ultimate goal of bringing a Stanley Cup back to Philadelphia."
