Helping The Homeless Survive The Heat Wave
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Saturday marked day ten of the sweltering wave of heat that has hit the area, and while most folks can take cover inside with fans and air conditioning, many homeless people have nowhere to go.
"There were several people in the Park. We got a response call to 2nd and Indiana and there were several hundred people out," says Carol Thomas, who is the Director of the Outreach Coordination Center for Project H.O.M.E.
She says the City is under a code red warning, so teams spent the day walking the streets.
"We're passing out water, making sure that people are okay. If they want to go to shelter, we are transporting people to the various shelters."
Thomas says heat overexposure can be deadly, especially to folks with mental illness who are dressed too warmly.
She asks if you see someone who needs help, call the city's 24-hour hotline at 215-232-1984.
