Helping Kids Become Writers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Those participating in Spells Writing Lab, weren't at home watching TV this summer. They did everything from creating secret spy identities to writing, directing, and starring in their own short film.

Located in the Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia, Spells is a non-profit that aims to develop the creative and expository writing abilities of school-age children and awaken a love of writing through summer, after-school tutoring and weekend writing workshops.

Each of the six-weeks at camp focused on a unique writing theme, allowing students to experiment with different genres of writing including recipes, original songs, and stand-up comedy routines.

Improvisation and outdoor games ensured that the writing process was active and energy-filled. At day's end, even those reluctant to write didn't want to go home.

Adults and teens can make a difference in a young person's life by volunteering with this inspiring organization; no educational background is necessary. Learn more at www.phillyspells.org.
