Help The Honey Bee

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What does the price of an apple have to do with your backyard and keeping kids healthy? Honey bees.
From apples and almonds to peaches, pumpkins and watermelons, without honey bees many of our favorite foods would disappear or cost so much we could never afford them. But honey bee populations are declining due to a mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder, and it turns out there's a lot that you can do in your own backyard to help them.
Learn more on Wednesday August 7 at two events. The first features three dynamic speakers: Brian Snyder, executive director of the PA Association for Sustainable Agriculture; along with world-renowned honey bee expert Dennis vanEngelsdorp as well as Dr. Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home (the book that taught so many gardeners like me about the importance of native plants).
While adults listen to the talks, kids can enjoy a separate event with supervised activities like making beeswax candles and honey snacks, dressing up as beekeepers and tasting different kinds of honey, and observing honey bees.
No reservations needed, these events are open to the public. You can just show up at the Sykes Student Union at West Chester University 110 West Rosedale Avenue, West Chester, PA 19383 on Wednesday August 7th at 7pm - both events are free and I'll be there.
