Hear Philly: Narberth Businesses Organize Leprechaun Hunt For Area Kids

By Andrew Kramer

NARBERTH, Pa. (CBS) --- Typically, leprechaun's store their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but March 15th you can find their treasure, along with the magical creatures clad in green themselves, all over Narberth, Montgomery County.

"The Great Narberth Leprechaun Hunt is basically an opportunity for about 500 kids, sometimes more, to come out and run all around downtown Narberth looking for leprechauns," explains Ed Ridgway, who is president of the Narberth Business Association.

These "leprechauns" are actually owners and employees at different shops in Narberth. They hand out special prizes to the kids.

"If the kids find the leprechaun, each leprechaun gives them a gold-wrapped chocolate coin, and then they put that in this black, plastic pot we give them that we call 'the pot of gold,' so the kids have to find all ten leprechauns and return to where they started and they receive a prize," says Ridgway.

This year, the big prize is going to be a gold American dollar.

At the start of the event, the kids receive a game card at a booth that gives them clues for where all the leprechauns are located. In addition to the actual hunt, though, there are other activities to take part in throughout the day.

"We always have some Irish dancing," Ridgway says, "so one of the Irish dance troops will be out there entertaining the crowd. Sometimes we have an Irish storyteller as well."

The KYW Newsradio Kidcast mobile studio will also be in Narberth that day. While Ridgway says this is a great event for the little ones, adults can take pleasure in seeing Narberth as well:

"It's a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to see the town, wander around, do a little shopping and spend some family time. It's a free family event, and people love these and come out year after year."

The Leprechaun Hunt throughout downtown Narberth starts at 1 p.m. and the event goes until 4 p.m., or until prizes last, so Ridgway advises if you're coming, don't wait until the last minute to get there.
