Health: Vasectomies On The Rise Around NCAA Tourney

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A March Madness trend for men is scheduling vasectomies, so they can recover while watching the games. 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl has more.
Doctors say there's a 50 percent increase in the number of vasectomies performed during the NCAA tournament. Some urologists even offer specials, like a free pizza, so men can relax, eat and watch basketball.
Jeremy Stelter is among a growing number of men enjoying March Madness on the couch at home watching college basketball.
"I got a vasectomy on Tuesday cause I figured it was time to stop having kids," said Jeremy.
It's become a popular trend, men scheduling a vasectomy during March Madness. They recover watching the games.
"I've been thinking about it for quite a long time. When my wife and I got married, she recalls me telling her that when we get married, when we're done having kids, I'm getting a vasectomy during March Madness," said Jeremy.
It's a quick and easy procedure, performed with a local anesthetic. To offset some minor bruising and swelling, men are told to take it easy. What better way than in front of a television.
"I think it's the die hard basketball fans that have a great reason to sit home and do nothing for those two days that are going to make that uptick a little higher," said Dr. Jesse Mills, a Urologist.
"Pain wasn't too bad," said Jeremy.
Jeremy, recalling what the procedure felt like, says to get in a few extra game, he'll keep quiet about how his recovery.
"I'm feeling pretty good right now but I'm not going to tell my wife or boss that quite yet," said Jeremy.
Doctors say vasectomies are a safe and effective form of permanent birth control, complications like infections are rare.
