Health: Free South Jersey Health Screenings

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A growing number of people are suffering with health problems, but can't afford to see a doctor. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl is On Your Side with more on a South Jersey program that could be the answer.

A screening program based in Salem County is seeing a record number of people needing medical help, and it's transforming lives.

Liz McCormick is a 54-year-old grandmother, without health insurance. So a visit like this for a quick health checkup is priceless.

"It's probably the most important thing that's ever happened to my life," said Liz. She was recently diagnosed with diabetes, that caused vision problems, and other health issues. Now she's getting free healthcare screenings and supplies from Cooper University Hospital's South Jersey Cardiovascular, Peripheral Vascular and Osteoporosis Screening Program.

"The screening consists of the blood pressure, the glucose, and the total cholesterol. The DEXA scan for bone density, and the ADI for peripheral vascular disease," said Sherri , a Registered Nurse who runs Cooper's Program. She travels to several locations, like churches and post offices, in Salem County offering her services.

"We are able to provide the individuals with glucometer and strips so they can check their blood sugar. We are able to provide blood pressure cuffs to check their blood pressure," said Sherri.

Liz credits this program for saving her vision. Sherri referred her to specialists who gave her necessary treatments.

"I do believe in angels, and she has a couple of wings," said Liz.

The program refers uninsured people to clinics throughout the area for further medical care, to pharmacies for discounted prescriptions, and educates them on how to prevent heart disease and other chronic health conditions.
