Hatboro-Horsham School District Gets $2M For Energy-Efficient School

HORSHAM, Pa. (CBS) - The Hatboro-Horsham School District in Montgomery County is getting two million dollars in funding from the state to help move forward a project to build what district officials say will be a cutting edge energy efficient school.
The school board hasn't formally voted to build the school, but all indications are there will be a new Hallowell Elementary on adjacent land on Easton Road that will be transferred from the military to the school district. The plan is to create a new high performance building anticipated to reduce energy costs by 70 percent and water usage by thirty percent.
State Rep. Todd Stephens who helped secure the funding says, "a penny saved is a penny earned and if we can save significant dollars on energy costs in our schools that's a win-win for the taxpayers and the schools."
The project will include a geothermal HVAC system and installation of energy efficient lighting. District Business Manager Bob Reichert says the current school is fifty years old and in need of major renovations that wouldn't be cost effective. The school could be ready by June of 2016.
