Hatboro-Horsham Recruits Senior Citizens To Volunteer At Elementary School
By Brad Segall
HORSHAM, Pa. (CBS) - When students return to one elementary school in the Hatboro-Horsham School District next month, they may be seeing some senior citizens roaming the hallways.
Senior Adults for Greater Education is a Bucks County non-profit that links older adults with students and their teachers. They're expanding to Montgomery County kicking off the program at Hallowell Elementary School in September. Seniors volunteer to help out in the school several times a week. SAGE Executive Director Beryl Katz calls it a win-win situation for the seniors and the students.
"A lot of kids don't have the luxury of having grandparents nearby and similarly the grandparents don't have their grandkids nearby but they still want to interact with the younger generation," Katz says the seniors read to the students, listen to the students read, review math facts, and help students prepare for statewide assessment tests.
She says the amount of volunteers depends on how many teachers open their classrooms. A recruitment drive will be held at the school September 24th. For more information, visit www.beasage.org
