Harrisburg Loses Its Daily Paper As 'Patriot-News' Goes To 3 Days a Week

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania's capital city will soon join the ranks of other cities that no longer have a daily newspaper.
Along with some of its other papers including those in New Orleans and Syracuse, Advance Publications has announced that its Harrisburg newspaper, the Patriot-News, will begin publishing a print version only three days a week.
The word comes as the City of Harrisburg struggles to avoid bankruptcy.
Among the folks who said they will miss the daily print version was William Lynch, the court-appointed receiver for the city.
"I don't know whether it's vital to the city's fiscal recovery, but it's a nice thing, certainly, to have a daily paper," he told KYW Newsradio today.
In an on-line story written by Sara Ganim, who earlier this year won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, describes the move by the Patriot-News to end the daily print version and focus instead on the Internet as being driven by innovation, not cost-cutting.
