Harcum College Offers Special Scholarship To Aid Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (CBS) -- Harcum College, in Bryn Mawr, is offering a special scholarship for full-time students from counties in Delaware, New Jersey, and New York affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The monetary award covers two academic years at the two-year college.
Harcum College president Jon DeTemple says the idea came from the school's athletic department.
Harcum plays a number of teams from schools in New Jersey that were affected by the superstorm.
DeTemple says that prompted athletic director Drew Kelly to propose offering scholarships to students from areas devastated by the storm.
"Part of that issue may be that they don't have a home anymore," DeTemple says. "That kind of knocks out their higher ed aspirations. So we thought it would be a good idea, because we're a residential campus, to offer scholarships in those areas to just help out, to give a hand."
The scholarship covers room and board, which cost $8,600, and DeTemple says there's no limit to the number of scholarships offered.
"I have no idea how many people will be interested in that," he says, "but it just seemed like the right thing to do. That's kind of what we try to do at Harcum -- the right things."
