Hamels Looks To End Phillies' Skid In San Diego

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies have dropped three straight games, including the first two games of their series in San Diego. Last night A.J. Burnett suffered his 17th loss of the season as the Phillies fell, 5-4.

Tonight the Phillies will look snap that losing streak as they start left-hander Cole Hamels against the Padres. Hamels is 8-7 this season with a 2.51 ERA. Last time out he pitched seven strong innings against Miami, allowing just a run in seven innings of work. But in a familiar development when Hamels starts, the Phillies struggled at the plate, and Hamels got a no-decision in a game the Phillies eventually won, 3-1.

Hamels has pitched well against the Padres in his career. In 15 career starts against San Diego, he is 8-2 with a fine 2.21 ERA.

The Padres will also go with a lefty tonight as Eric Stults gets the call. He is 7-16 this season with a 4.49 ERA. He is 0-1 in 4 games (3 starts) against the Phillies in his career with a 5.14 ERA.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with the Phillies beat writer for the News Journal down in Wilmington, Meghan Montemurro, about several topics including Hamels and what the future holds for the franchise.
