Group Says Some South Jersey Highways Are Deadliest For Pedestrians

DELRAN, N.J. (CBS) -- A new report names the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in New Jersey. And there are some familiar names on the list.
For the fifth year in a row, Route 130 through Burlington County is among the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in New Jersey. Nine pedestrians were killed on Rt. 130 from 2009 to 2011 (see related story).
Nine were also killed on the Black Horse Pike in Atlantic County, and eight walkers were killed along the White Horse Pike through Camden County.
Matt Norris, a spokesman for the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, which compiled the report, says those arterial roads jammed with restaurants and strip malls are the most deadly for walkers.
"These roads were built primarily to move automobile traffic very quickly," he tells KYW Newsradio. "But we see that there are pedestrians that are using them every day. And quite a few pedestrians."
The group says the state needs to do more to provide sidewalks and mid-block places for pedestrians to cross.
