Groundbreaking Ceremony Held For Renovations At Stinger Square Park In Grays Ferry

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday afternoon for sprucing up Stinger Square Park in Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighborhood.
Mayor Michael Nutter joined community leaders and residents for the event, but was upstaged by a youngster who was among a group of children he called up to the podium to surround him as he talked about the importance of parks in the city.
On a more serious note, Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources, says the park is in for more than $500,000 in upgrades.
"The entryways are going to be completely re-done. They're going to be all landscaped, new benches, new lighting. In the center of the park, there's going to be a small amphitheatre, we'll spurce up the play equipment and do a lot of work on the grounds," said DiBerardinis.
He says the work will be done by the end of June, just in time for summer.
