Greeks Celebrate Independence Day In Philadelphia Sunday
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A sure harbinger of spring - the annual Greek Independence Day Parade down the Ben Franklin Parkway is on Sunday.
190 years ago, on March 25th, 1821, Greek rebel forces raised the flag of the cross and declared Greece free from 400 years of Ottoman rule.
"Life to Hellenism," says George Hortiatis, of the Federation of Hellenic American Societies in Philadelphia, who adds it will be a colorful and joyous sight on the Parkway on Sunday.
"Children dressed in authentic Greek costumes, dancing along the Parkway, celebrating and waving the Greek flags, bands, floats and people celebrating the love of liberty that the Greeks have."
The parade will form at 1pm Sunday at about 16th and the Parkway and march up to the steps of the Art Museum.
