Grass Skirts And Figure Skates Meet At RiverRink

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was a strange mash-up of arctic and tropic at the Penn's Landing ice skating rink Sunday. Hula dancers entertained skaters who'd braved one of the coldest days of the year.

The Aloha style dancers tried to help skaters forget the frigid temperatures outdoors.

"I think it's refreshing at this time of year."

"It's pretty funny, though. It's cute. I guess the kids like it a lot."

The idea, according to river rink program director Keeya Branson Davis, is to bring a little warmth to the mid-winter.

"Get people through the winter doldrums so when things are really cold and everyone is longing for those summer months and the warmer times, we figure that we bring a little of that to the winter by having this cabin fever reliever event."

Skaters enjoyed the extra added attraction at the rink, but were they warmer?

"I don't think so. I think you want more layers. I don't think a hula skirt is going to keep you warm."
