Without further ado, here's The Poobah.
Phil E. Phan: The eagles looked woeful in their first exhibition game. Time to put away the rose-colored glasses and start worrying?
Poobah: What does Eskin say, "If you're scared, get a dog!" And that will be the last time the Grand Imperial Poobah will quote Howard Eskin.
Yes, the Eagles looked wretched against Chicago---and that includes Nick Foles---but it was the first game, and the referees were hammering away at enforcing the new rules, so there was no flow to the game.
Foles has spent most of the is week eyeballing Tom Brady, and that has to help. However, Riley Cooper is hurt again, and Jeremy Maclin came hobbling out of Wednesday's practice, so Foles will be throwing to strangers this week against the Patriots. Carey Williams asked for a long night by sneering at the Patriots as cheaters until someone told him to zip it up or wind up forlorn with DeSean. The special teams looked impressive, so that's one good thing that came out of the opener. Remember, Chip Kelly keeps his offense vanilla in these exhibitions. Be brave, stay optimistic. Wait for the Rocky Road or tutti-fruity, or whatever flavor Kelly's hurry-up offense reminds you of.
