Grand Imperial Poobah: 'The Vikings Look Stupid'
By Stan "The Grand Imperial Poobah" Hochman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- (Editor's Note) Stan Hochman, a Daily News sports columnist for 55 years, has been appearing on 94WIP's morning show for over a year now, settling disputes (and starting new ones) as the "Grand Imperial Poobah." He brings that persona to CBSPhilly.com/poobah on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we welcome input on which issues you want the Poobah to take a good, hard look at. Send requests and ideas for The Poobah to WIPpoobah@gmail.com.
Without further ado, here's The Poobah.
Phil E. Phan: What is going on in Minnesota, where Adrian Peterson, who whipped his four year old son with a tree branch, was deactivated for Sunday's game, then reactivated on Monday, then deactivated at 2 a.m. on Wednesday?
Poobah: Just for the record, the first time the Poobah heard of a "switch" came when covering the first Sonny Liston-Muhammad Ali fight in Miami. Ali referred to Liston as a big, ugly bear and justified his 7-to-1 underdog role by saying he was going "bear hunting with a switch." He showed up at the weigh-in waving a skinny branch and had to be held back by a posse that included a startled Sugar Ray Robinson. Liston thought Ali was unpredictably nuts, which is what Ali wanted him to think.
Peterson left bloody welts on his son, one of seven kids he has fathered with five different women, yet he can't remember how many times he hit the boy. He apparently stuffed leaves in the child's mouth to stifle his screams. Deep thinkers like Charles Barkley said that that sort of whipping is traditional in the South. Peterson defended the brutal behavior by saying that that was the way he was raised. The courts will decide if it was appropriate disciplining or child abuse. Meanwhile, the Vikings look stupid with their flip-flopping. In Philly we can count our blessings that our best running back, Shady McCoy, makes headlines with a 20 cent tip on a $60 tab at a burger joint.
You can hear Stan "The Grand Imperial Poobah" Hochman on the 94WIP Morning Show every Thursday at 7:20am E.T. Send the Philadelphia sports issues you want The Poobah to tackle to WIPpoobah@gmail.com
