Governor Corbett Puts State-Owned Bus Up For Sale
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - In a move he says is symbolic of a change in direction by state government, Governor Corbett today said he's putting the state's "Commonwealth One" tour bus up for sale.
The 41-foot motor coach dubbed "Commonwealth One" and painted-over with scenes representative of Pennsylvania places was donated by its previous owner after Ed Rendell took office as governor in 2003.
"I hope it'll make money because it didn't cost us anything to purchase it," Rendell said. "So it'll be a net gain."
But the new governor said the bus did cost taxpayers $66,000 in maintenance while being driven less than 26,000 miles, "We put a lot of money into it. We didn't use it. $66,000 in repairs, 25,000 in miles. It really wasn't used. So, yeah, I guess you could say it's excess. You want to be efficient."
The bus, which needs another $5,000 dollars in transmission repairs before it can move under its own power again, will be placed up for bid as part of a state equipment auction in May and June.
