Government Agency Regulates Workplace Safety
By Amy E. Feldman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Concerned about dangerous conditions at your office? There's a government agency ready to offer assistance.
The library in Orange, New Jersey, was shuttered indefinitely last month by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) for the hazards that faced workers there: lead paint, asbestos, disrepair including broken handrails, among other dangers.
Most librarians and for that matter, most office workers don't think of their offices as dangerous workplaces, but OSHA has regulations intended to protect the health and safety of all workers, and in addition to classically dangerous workplaces, also have regulations governing computer workstations, grocery warehouses, nursing homes, and many more.
From ergonomics to mold and other building toxins, OSHA regulates the working conditions that may harm workers. Visit OSHA.gov if you are concerned about the dangers at your workplace, even if your coworkers say 'SSSSHHHH!'
