Gov. Wolf To Sign Bill Delaying Controversial Graduation Exams
HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- Governor Tom Wolf says he will sign a bill on the way to his desk that will delay for two years the use of controversial exams as part of the graduation requirement for Pennsylvania high school students.
Andy Dinniman, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Education Committee, was one of the lawmakers who led the charge for legislation to delay the Keystone Exam requirement. Dinniman spoke Wednesday as the Senate voted to send that legislation to the governor.
"This is not good assessment. This is not fair assessment. That's why today we are overriding this," said Dinniman.
A day earlier, Governor Wolf said he would sign the bill.
"I think the Keystone Exams have led to some concerns among the education community that it's part of the high-stakes test environment," said Wolf.
The Senate, meanwhile, has also passed a House bill that would allow the Education Secretary to give school districts more flexibility in dealing with the 180 day instruction requirement when there are weather and other emergencies. That bill was amended so it will have to go back to the House.
