Gov. Christie Announces More Flood Buyouts In The Wake Of Superstorm Sandy
SOUTH RIVER, N.J. (AP) -- Gov. Chris Christie has announced more buyouts of flood-prone properties in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
The governor traveled to the Middlesex County town of South River on Tuesday, where he said applications have been received from 79 interested property owners.
The governor also announced buyout offers had been made to 129 property owners in nearby Sayreville.
The state is buying up contiguous properties from willing sellers that will allow it to create flood plains. FEMA will provide 75 percent of the funding, while the state will pay 25 percent.
Christie announced in May that $300 million in buyout funding would be made available to Superstorm Sandy victims. The state plans to buy about 1,300 repeatedly flooded properties, including 300 in the Passaic River basin that didn't flood during Sandy.
