Gosnell's Legal Team Begins Defense Against Remaining Murder Charges
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - After the trial judge dismissed three of the eight murder counts against abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell because of insufficient evidence, the defense has begun. Gosnell's legal team is expected to begin presenting witnesses today. The defense for co-defendant Eileen O'Neill presented a series of witnesses yesterday.
Eileen O'Neill faces charges based on evidence she practiced general medicine at the clinic without a license. She saw patients for check-ups and other health issues not related to the abortion business -- patients and co-workers called her Doctor. But a defense witness, a former patient, Cheryl Davis, has testified there was no deception for her, Davis said O'Neill told her she didn't have a license.
But Davis says O'Neill treated her well. Doctor Gosnell always stopped in at the end of the visit, talked with her, repeated what O'Neill had said.
O'Neill has also presented character testimony. There is a gag order and there's been no public indication whether O'Neill or Gosnell will take the witness stand.
