Good Samaritan Helps Delaware County Police Catch Hit-Run Driver
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) - "It's only through the grace of God that I'm here today, said Bethany McCabe of Upper Darby.
"I could be dead."
The 35-year-old is still healing from the car crash.
"Immediately, my head was hurting terribly and then it when to my neck and my shoulders," McCabe expressed.
McCabe, who teaches 7th grade at Bebber Middle School in west Philadelphia is also studying to become a minister. Today she shared her testimony about the horrifying event and the woman she now calls her hero.
"I never met her but I love her because she didn't think about herself in that situation," said McCabe.
That situation happened around 8:30 Sunday night. Bethany was heading north on Union Avenue in Lansdowne when police say, 18-year-old Cody Swieder of Delaware ran through a red light while heading east on Baltimore Avenue towards Philadelphia.
"Slammed into the car and the car spun around," McCabe explained. "I was on the other side of the street facing the opposite direction."
The impact ruined the rear driver's side of Bethany's 96' Nissan Altima, leaving her helpless.
But Kadeeja Dike stepped in and wouldn't let Swieder get away!
Police say Kadeeja followed behind the suspected hit and run driver to East Lansdowne. When he pulled into a driveway on Glennwood Avenue, Kadeeja used her car to block him in.
Investigators say Swieder didn't stop. They say he hit Kadeeja's car and fled to his girlfriends on East Stewart Avenue back in Lansdowne. Within minutes officers arrested Swieder and charged him with the hit and run crime among other things.
Bethany continues to recover, hoping to find Kadeeja.
"I'm thankful to my hero Kadeeja and I'm thankful to my God.
Lansdowne Police Chief Daniel Kortab Jr. called Kadeeja's effort to catch a criminal, a noble gesture. He also says it's always important to keep in mind your own safety.
