Golf at Galen Hall
It is a bit off the beaten path, but if you like century old courses with a boatload of charm, you'll enjoy a trip to the other side of Reading and Galen Hall Golf Club. It has history -- a century old course featuring a natural layout with one major manufactured exception-- what some think was the nation's first-ever island green. The 15th is a moat hole crafted by AW Tillinghast, a true island green that will really test you from the blue tees at 190 yards. You can read more here at the course's website.
Galen Hall had been on my "to do" list for years and I finally got there this week. I enjoyed every minute of it, right down to my first-ever Senior Discount. Woo-hoo, I finally found an advantage to being 56 and feeling like I'm going on 80! I celebrated by breaking out my bright yellow Srixon Z-Star balls for the first time, in memory of all those yellow and orange rocks that seniors used to play back in the day. Galen Hall, by the way, is $26 to ride for the 55-and-over crowd during the week, $32 (with cart) for the rest of you young bucks. The top weekend rate is only $42 to ride.
While touring the course I ran into a group which included Jim Wickersham of Warrington, who has been including Galen Hall in his golfing plans for 37 years. I think you'll enjoy his thoughts on the historic layout and what keeps him coming back:
