Gloucester County, NJ Inches Toward Its Own Pet-Neutering Clinic
By David Madden
CLAYTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Gloucester County, NJ is working to open its own spay-and-neuter clinic next door to the county animal shelter, in Clayton.
Thousands of adopted dogs and cats are taken outside the county every year to be operated on in the name of controlling the pet population. And that raises adoption costs.
Now, a half million dollars -- mostly donations -- has gone to building the shell of an animal clinic that Gloucester County freeholder-director Rob Damminger hopes to have open by next summer.
"We've always promoted the spay-neuter," he said today. "Now we'll be able to do it at a much more affordable rate, and hopefully get much more of a participation rate with the residents in the county."
Once they get a veterinarian on board, that is. Bids for the contract will be solicited in the fall.
