Gloucester County Man Indicted On Charges He Tried To Murder NJ State Trooper

DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. (CBS) -- A Westville, Gloucester County man has been indicted for the attempted murder of a New Jersey State Trooper during a traffic stop in Deptford in August of last year.
Twenty-year-old Daren Rebel was seen driving erratically along Route 55 and was pulled over by a state trooper near the Deptford Mall, according to the 10 count indictment handed up by a grand jury.
Elie Honig directs the state Division of Criminal Justice.
"When the police officer approached his car, Mr. Rebel accelerated and dragged the police officer under the car … almost running him over with the tires … but not quite," he said.
The officer's injuries were not serious.
Honig says as luck would have it, "it just so happens that an off duty state police officer was nearby. He tried to intervene and Mr. Rebel eventually drove his car at that state police trooper."
Rebel is free on bail. If convicted on the attempted murder charge, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
