Giving Up Social Media Cold Turkey
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Can you give up all your technology, even for a day? A group of local students found that it's harder than you think.
Psychology professor Kathy Hirsh-Pasek challenged 31 Temple University students to go cold turkey on their gadgets for just one day.
"Can you stay off Facebook? Can you not write one text message that's social in nature? Can you not tweet? Now, you're allowed to use the internet if it's for information or do something for a class, but social networking is off the table," Hirsh-Pasek said.
Fourteen survived the day.
Senior Shayna Lowry didn't -- it was just too hard. She was surprised at how little personal communication she did.
"It actually made me change the way I use my cell phone and whether I'm going to pick up my cell phone and text someone in the course of a conversation with someone else. It actually made me re-evaluate how I approach situations," Lowry said.
Lowry says the students also observed others using technology and were shocked at how the gadgets took over their lives.
