Giordano: The New Golden Age Of TV

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – We are living in a strange golden age of TV.  Much of network TV is stupid and involves things done a million times.  However, AMC has given series like Mad Men and Breaking Bad, one of the five best shows in TV history.

I'm writing this column on Monday night after processing the latest episode of  The Walking Dead.  This week was another piece of what is arguably their best season. Of course,  the miraculous escape from  the zombies was very troubling to fans because this show will kill off major characters. The zombies  are only props for the conflicts people face in the face of a very cruel world.

I'm writing this at 6 pm, only four hours away from Fargo, the gem of my big three shows. Fargo on FX  Monday nights at 10 makes it very hard to go to sleep at 11. The Coen brothers, producers of the show, have created a 1970s Midwestern world that is equal parts mayhem and dark humor. This show has allowed me to develop a bond with a producer at the station that resembles guys bonding over the latest Eagles game. Given Sunday's game, this show will produce a lot less agita.

Finally, I save up Showtime's Homeland for on demand viewing on Tuesday nights. I think the show has faded a notch this year with a shift from the Middle East to Germany but its world of terrorist plots is sadly still ripped from daily headlines.

These are my Big Three and thanks to cable and on demand this is a golden age of TV. The problem is I need a few more. How about helping out? Send me your favorites at CBSPhilly.com/Dom.
