Gift Of Time Could Make For Perfect Present This Holiday Season
By Michelle Durham
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- During the holiday season, the emphasis is on gift giving and hoping for that special, albeit expensive gift. But some hope you'll decide to give a different gift this year -- the gift of your time.
Jacqueline Cervino teaches art at Nazareth Academy High School. Each year she takes her students to nearby Our Lady of Calvary Grade School to make ornaments for their family members. Cervino said in all her years of teaching, when students share holiday stories, it's never about what was underneath the wrapping paper.
"It's really about spending time with family and friends that make the holidays so special for my students," she said.
And if you think grade school children don't feel that way, think again.
"Instead of them just giving you something and leaving you alone for you to play with it by yourself, you can spend time with them," said 5th grader, Angela Fowler.
Hannah is in 7th grade. She shared her honest opinion.
"I like spending time with the family," she said, "but I like the big gifts too!"
What was Hanna's favorite Christmas memory?
The one year when I was younger, we called Santa," she said. "That was pretty cool."
So it really wasn't the gifts under the tree after all.
