Giants Player Accused Of Stealing More Than Bases
VINELAND, NJ (CBS) -- A Vineland man who helped the San Francisco Giants in their quest to a world championship is facing criminal charges back home.
Darren Ford was called up from the minors too late to make the post season squad, but it was last year after he finished his minor league play that he got a job at the R.K. Auto Group back home.
He was given cash and checks to put in the bank one day, but went to a motor vehicles office instead, according to Cumberland County First Assitant Prosecutor Harold Shapiro:
"He allegedly falsely reported to Vineland police that he had been victim of an armed robbery."
It's alleged he pocketed about $2,300. Ford waived presentment of the case to a grand jury and is applying for pre-trial intervention, a program for first offenders that, if successfully completed, could clear his record.
Ford's attorney did not return calls seeking comment.
