Germany's Dominating Win Over Brazil Was Most Tweeted Sports Event Ever
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- With 35.6 million tweets, Germany's 7-1 historic thumping of Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals broke Twitter, as it became the most tweeted sporting event ever, Twitter announced on Tuesday. The previous record was 24.9 million tweets during Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.
While Germany's fourth goal received the most tweets per second, Germany's fifth goal---scored by Sami Khedira---broke another record with 580,166 tweets per minute (TPM). In comparison, Barack Obama's Democratic National Convention acceptance speech peaked at 52,756 tweets per minute, while Beyonce's Super Bowl half-time show in 2013 peaked at 268,000 tweets per minute.
