German Heritage Celebration In Philadelphia This Weekend
By Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The calendar says it's September, but Oktoberfest is in full swing in Northeast Philadelphia.
The beer is flowing and brats are sizzling at the 140th annual Cannstatter Volksfest on Academy Road. If you're looking for a good bratwurst, this is the place to be.
Cannstatter president Wilhelm Glaser says bands from Germany are here to give an authentic Oktoberfest feel.
"You can enjoy yourself dancing while you try all the ethnic food. It's just a great time."
There are some Philadelphia traditions here, too.
"It's just a wonderful day to be with friends," Rosemary says. "The string band is coming, which I love the string bands, so I'm just here for a good time."
A massive column built of fruit and vegetables is the centerpiece of this harvest celebration.
It's a family affair for volunteers Connie and her daughter Jessica.
"I've been coming since I was two-years-old as a little girl," Connie says. "It's a good time. What happens at Cannstatters, stays at Cannstatters."
"It's fun. I like volunteering and helping out," Jessica says. "And it's just a good time, going into the tent afterwards, like she said. It's just a good time."
The festival runs through Monday.
