Funeral For Joe Paterno Scheduled For Wednesday
By Tony Romeo and Natasha Brown
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (CBS) - Memorial arrangements for Joe Paterno have been announced as mourners continue to pay their respects to the former Penn State football coach who died Sunday.
A day after Paterno's death, pilgrims braved cold, wind and rain to visit the statue of the coach outside Beaver Stadium.
"I remember growing up with Joe Paterno and I could never, ever imagine another coach," says Kelly Corrigan who drove from Tioga County with her mom. "And I knew it was going to happen eventually, but it's just an awful, awful way for it to happen."
While the informal mourning continues, the Paterno family has announced plans for a ten-hour viewing Tuesday starting at 1 p.m. at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the Penn State campus.
In a release issued by the White House, a spokesperson said President Obama spoke with Paterno's wife, Sue, and son, Jay, to offer his condolences for their family's loss. During their conversation, the President recalled fond memories of when he first met Coach Paterno and said that he and Michelle would keep the Paterno family in their prayers during this difficult time.
There will be another four-hour viewing at 8 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a private funeral Wednesday afternoon.
A memorial service is planned at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center next to Beaver Stadium.
