Funding a Cure for Aids
by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough
I have been covering medical developments since the early days of HIV and aids.
Certainly there have been many major developments in the treatment of what was once considered a death sentence. But through all these years, there has rarely been talk about finding a cure for the virus that causes aids.
According to several articles in the journal Nature, for the first time in years, there is talk among researchers about this possibility. We know that the virus has a remarkable ability to resist antiviral drugs and hide out in the body, but the National Institutes of Health and other funding bodies are soliciting applications, aimed at eradicating HIV from the body.
The fact that they are trying to do this is a crucial step that could lead to groundbreaking developments.
