Free Concert Held To Benefit Victims Of Deadly Southwest Philadelphia Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A free concert featuring a number of local gospel artists was held in Southwest Philadelphia Monday night to benefit the families of the children killed in the Gesner Street fire a few weeks ago (see related stories).
While all money raised at the show at the First Baptist Church of Paschall would be given to the families affected by the fire, Pastor Eric Simmons says the night was more about lifting the spirits of a community that was hurt, and at times angry.
"Coming together to hear good music, but more importanly to fellowship together, to lift up the spirits of those that experienced this loss. They've been fed food, and now we're going to feed them some entertainment. We're just going to have a good time," Pastor Simmons said.
So Pastor Simmons says invitations to the event went out to more than just people who live in the neighborhood.
"We've invited police, and civil officials and government officials to come. Senators are here, various agencies are here. And we're just here on one accord, to just try to come together to support one another during this time."
Before the show kicked off, the families were given a special introduction and a standing ovation from the hundreds of people at the show.
