Franklin Institute Launches Project To Archive Work Of Black Scientists

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A special event at the Franklin Institute tonight launches a nationwide project to archive the work of African-American scientists.

Philadelphia will be one of ten cities targeted by the ScienceMakers initiative to interview and archive the stories of 180 African-American scientists across the nation and to do public programming around the project.

Julieanna Richarson, founder of the initiative, says when people think of black scientists, it's usually George Washington Carver and peanuts.

"Unfortunately, that is what is still being taught in terms of black scientists in science centers and schools around the United States, as if these other scientists and their contributions haven't existed. So that is really what we're trying to change."
